This statement is used by Harper Lee not only to emphasise the difference between two answers, the obvious- that Tom Robinson is innocent and the equally obvious but wrongly assumed answer that Mayella Ewell is the innocent one. It is also used to show the reader that the outcome of the trial will be final and with no shades of grey.
