By the 1930s ( the time that To Kill a Mockingbird was set) Coca-cola was already a hugely popular drink, especially in the United States. In the early thirties Archie Lee came up with the advertising slogan ‘The Pause that Refreshes’ and before the decade was out the campaign was so well known that ‘Pause’ had almost become a synonym for Coke. Another Advertising scheme for Coke that became widely recognised from the thirties onwards was that iconic modern day image of Santa Clause. Originally used as a cunning advertising scheme the red suited, white bearded Father Christmas we know today sold millions of gallons of Coke and from that time onwards Coca-Cola has become one of the most iconic beverages of our time.
