When addressing the jury, Atticus refers to the group as simply ‘Gentlemen’ showing the fact that the jury was made up of solely men. At the time this trial is set, 1935, women had only had the vote for a mere 7 years. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird the idea is given that in Alabama at that time, women were considered to be refined yet fragile and delicate. Because of this women, alongside black people, found it very difficult to be included in the majorly male dominated jury system.
